Welcome Back To The Leanne Weekly…
…And welcome September, my Birthday month and one of my favourite months of the year. It’s like the summer hangover month with a sprinkle of autumn teasing us!
Tuesdays are fast becoming my favourite day of the week because it means I get to land in your inbox, and share a little something you can hopefully take into your week.
Your feedback is invaluable, please keep it coming. I’ve loved hearing how you’ve made REST a ‘GUILT FREE’ part of your week (as you should), and your Home Bargains confessions had me laughing out loud (I see you 👀). I’ll admit, maybe I am too early on the Halloween hype… but it won’t stop me! if I lived in the US, my seasonal decor obsession would be even more out of control, so what you witness here is actually very polite, ha!
Sharing a book recommendation from a reader that sounds great if you wanted to indulge a little more in last week's topic on REST. I’ve just ordered mine….
Speaking of things that restore us, let's take a quick Peloton pit stop. Recently I had one of my favourite teaching moments EVER. Every so often, I’ll do a ride at Peloton that feels like pure gold dust - either years in the making or just really personal to me. The 30 minute BEE GEES ride was exactly that. Same WOW as with The Beatles, Spice Girls, and the Cher rides before it. I wish I could bottle the feeling! Please say you’ve done it, and sang in your best falsetto throughout?! I still have 1 (or) more artists on the dream list (everything crossed it happens one day) rhymes with Peorge Pichael.
A lot happens behind the scenes to bring these rides to life, from music licensing to artist approvals, custom mixes, and the final touches with theme styling. It’s never as simple as pressing play on any track we fancy, whenever we fancy. Wouldn’t that be dreamy?! Someone once said, ‘you should just play Adele in your classes’… trust me, if I could, I would!
Talking of dreamy, this week also gave me some gorgeous people moments. Ben and I snuck in on a double date with some of our besties - technically we gatecrashed their belated wedding anniversary dinner, but 30+ years of friendship means we’re basically one family now. Zoe is our food queen, and always knows the spots to go to, and this time it was Nina in Marylebone, London. The food is BANGING and there’s an excitable vibe, I mean Monday night felt like a Saturday. Make sure you book in advance!
I also had a totally impromptu girls’ night at mine with a takeaway, chats, and belly laughs that were pure medicine for the soul. Friendships in your 30s look different, everyone’s at different life stages, it’s hard to find a time we’re all free, but we give each other grace and just savour the moments we get. We lived in each other’s pockets in our 20s, so now the time we do get feels extra precious. Oh, and we tried a fab new 0% sparkling rosé which we all loved, and I’ve linked it in my List of Joy… obviously!

Alright, let's do this… We’re diving into Movement, Boundaries, and a new little feature I’m calling ‘Mishaps of the Week’ this week. A mix of the educational, the real and the ‘did that really just happen?’
Movement As Power, Not Punishment…
‘Movement is not punishment for what you ate, or a means to fit someone else’s ideal. It’s freedom in your body, and a celebration of what that body can do.’
So it’s definitely time we got into movement, as that’s what most of you will know me for, and my purpose in life is to get people of all ages, sizes, abilities to move and to feel confident doing it. This is a topic we’ll come back to in many different ways over time, but here is a great place to start…
For so many years, women were taught to see movement as a way to shrink themselves, the message was everywhere: in magazines, diet culture, and the idea that our worth was somehow tied to how little space we could take up. Exercise was sold as punishment for eating, or a route to an ‘ideal body’ that, truthfully, didn’t and doesn’t exist.
Here’s the reality about a ‘perfect’ body: It has shifted decade-by-decade, so chasing it is exhausting and honestly, impossible. If you take my Peloton rides, you know I love to go back through the decades with my music, (70’s,80’s and 90’s are my SWEET SPOT) but let’s take a quick moment to go through the western ideal body types that have been thrown upon us through the decades. Brace yourselves:
1960s – The Twiggy Era. Ideal: Extremely thin, childlike frame with long legs.
1970s – Natural & Lean. Ideal: Slim, athletic but still lean, with a more ‘natural’ look. Think Farrah Fawcett.
1980s – Strong & Aerobic. Ideal: Fit, toned, but still slim. We’re talking Jane Fonda style. Visible muscle, but you must make sure it’s ’feminine’.
1990s – ‘Heroin Chic’. Ideal: Very thin, ‘waif-like’ bodies. We’re in Kate Moss times here, and grunge fashion.
2000s – Flat Stomach & Low-Rise Jeans. Ideal: Ultra-slim with a flat stomach, small waist, no curves. I mean Britney was giving us ultra low rise jeans, along with the rise of the Victoria’s Secret Angels.
2010s – Curves & Kardashian Influence. Ideal: Hourglass figure - tiny waist, big hips and bum, fuller bust. Introducing the steep rise of cosmetic surgery to make this look attainable, because no amount of squats is getting that shape, I’m sorry.
2020s – Wellness, ‘Strong not Skinny’ (with a twist). Ideal: Athletic, toned, but not bulky. The ‘Pilates body’. Feels more general, but definitely still a ‘type’.
And, it’ll go on…
Exhausted just reading that? Me too. The through-line?! The ‘ideal’ body keeps changing, swinging from ultra-thin to curvy to athletic and back again. It means this: even if you manage to mold yourself into one decade’s ideal, by the time the next one rolls around, the goalposts will have shifted.
The ONLY body worth investing in is the one that carries YOU through life - strong, capable, and uniquely yours. Your body is your home, it's gone through so much that only you really know about, and that’s the body we’re going to focus on moving, because being able to move your body is a PRIVILEGE.
Building a body that is strong, capable, and resilient? That will NEVER go out of style.
Strength, energy, and confidence are timeless.
Strength is being able to run with your kids, pets, friends and everywhere your body can take you. It’s lifting your shopping bags, dancing until midnight, or simply feeling at home in your own skin. It’s also smashing PBs on the bike or at the gym if that’s where you’re at. It’s all of the things beyond a sizing label on some clothes. Strength is freedom at every age and every stage.
As a coach at Peloton, this is the heartbeat of my work. If even one person can connect to movement as a celebration, not a punishment, through my classes, that’s the greatest reward (for both of us!). When I’m lucky enough to meet members after class, I’m always choked up by the openness and honesty about how Peloton has changed everything for them when it comes to movement. And yet, I’m not surprised, because I’m fanatical about understanding why this shift happens, and I’m always driven to learn and understand more. I am such a fact geek, here’s a few around women and movement:
Women who move more often report lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. This can be up to 40%, which is HUGE, and a great reason to give it a good go.
Resistance training isn’t just about supporting bone density, which is crucial as we age (women reach peak bone mass by 30), but strength training and impact movement are also key in reducing osteoporosis risk.
Movement improves your circulation, sleep quality, and energy levels, which will have ripple effects across hormonal health, mood, and daily resilience. It’s super impactful for women during their menstrual cycle, and then into perimenopause / menopause. We all want the endorphins and the boost of dopamine. Give it to us!!
Last one, but I could go all day: movement is fantastic in protecting memory and brain health.
Beyond science, movement is an act of empowerment. Every time you choose to move, you’re reminding yourself: my body is not a project, it’s a partner.
Some days it’s high energy, other days it’s restorative. Both count. Both matter.
And if you need any guidance in getting moving, I’m here for you. It can take a moment to find a rhythm, so be kind with yourselves if this is where you’re at:
1. Start Small, Start Daily - You don’t need an hour at the gym. 10 minutes of movement counts. Daily consistency beats occasional intensity.
2. Mindset: connect Fun & Fitness - Move in ways that make you want to move. Enjoyment keeps you coming back.
3. Accountability is where it’s at - Tracking your progress and sharing your wins (even small ones) creates momentum and makes it fun, not a chore.
So we get to our challenge of the week:
Less of a challenge and more of a ‘Let’s celebrate movement together’ this week. When you have a moment during movement that makes you feel strong, alive, or just really good in your body this week, send me a DM on instagram or tag me in a story - I’d love to cheer you on! I want selfies, videos, the lot!
‘When women move, we don’t just change our bodies. We change our energy, our confidence, and our capacity to show up fully in the world.’
The Art Of Saying No (And Why It’s So Hard)…
Saying ‘no’ is one of the most important life skills we never properly get taught.
We say yes to plans we don’t want to go to, yes to extra work when we’re already stretched thin, yes to keep the peace, yes to being ‘fine’ when we’re not.
Every time we say yes to something that doesn’t serve us, we are, by default, saying no to something that does, which is our rest, our joy, our energy, our boundaries.
“When you say ‘yes’ to others, make sure you’re not saying ‘no’ to yourself.” Paulo Coelho
Of course, we can’t say no to everything, life doesn’t work like that. But saying no when you could change the outcome isn’t rude, it’s powerful. It’s creating boundaries that protect the things that really matter.
I really wanted to get into this today, because for years I said yes first and figured out how to make it work later. Sometimes it worked brilliantly - many opportunities have come from being willing and open. But, it’s also led to moments of burnout, resentment and that draining sense that everyone else’s needs came before mine.
2022, the year that changed it all for me, forced me to practice boundaries in a whole new way. Suddenly, I couldn’t say yes to everything. My energy had limits. My body had different needs.
Boundaries are necessary. When I actually started to understand this in therapy, it felt like a ‘mic drop’ moment, I can’t explain the weight that lifted off of me. People-pleasing had been my go-to for years, but here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. I’d happily run on empty while trying to fill everyone else up. That’s love, yes, but it’s not sustainable.
Now I remind myself (daily!):
‘No’ is a full sentence. I don’t owe anyone an essay of excuses.
I can say no kindly - ‘I really appreciate you thinking of me, but I can’t commit right now.’
Every ‘no’ is also a ‘yes’ - to more energy, alignment, and peace.
I’ll be honest, I still get that pang of guilt when I say no. I stop myself a lot from saying ‘no’ and then overexplaining myself. You know, give 101 reasons why you’re saying no. But in the last couple of years, I’ve started to notice something else too: relief. Freedom. Energy that comes back to me. More time for the things that light me up.
By the way, no wonder feeling guilty feels so uncomfortable - it activates the same regions of the brain as physical pain. So yes, boundaries will feel hard at first. But as I said above: every ‘no’ is backed by a very valid ‘yes.’
Saying no to late-night emails = yes to better sleep.
Saying no to dinner plans you dread = yes to a quiet night recharging.
Saying no to over-training = yes to recovery and strength.
“No is a complete sentence.” Anne Lamott
Learning to say no is one thing. Learning to glide through life without mishaps? Still working on that one. Here’s this week’s dose of chaos…
Mishaps Of The Week…
I had a few blunders this week, and thought you could have a little giggle or gasp at my expense. I would say these moments follow me through life, but add being pregnant to the mix, and I am finding myself in Mishap Mayhem.
MISHAP 1: Where do I start?! My brain! I was so not prepared for ‘pregnancy brain’, ‘baby brain’ - whatever you want to call it, but it’s a real, actual thing. Like, where has my brain gone? Has it shrivelled to nothing?! Did it fall out? Wherever it is, it’s not in my head. I’ve always prided myself on being organised and on top of things (My Mum will have thoughts on this!), but these days I put the raw dog food that is meant for the freezer or fridge into the cupboard, I forget everyone's names and don’t even ask me why I walked into a room?! I can laugh at myself, and I know I’m not alone in this, but it’s wild.
MISHAP 2: Last Monday, it was a Bank Holiday in the UK, beautiful weather and we’re nearing the end of Summer so everyone wants to make the most of it. We decided to go to one of our favourite beaches, West Wittering for the day, which has been so peaceful and quiet EVERY time we’ve gone. Not on a Bank Holiday, though. Major mishap! It usually takes 1.5 hours for us to get there, it took over 3 hours this time. You either pull together on these journeys or… you don’t. We didn’t on this occasion, so those few hours were quite unpleasant to say the least. We finally got there, went to find our ‘spot’… and it was completely packed. Not a single patch of beach left for us. We walked for ages in the midday sun (in silence, I might add), eventually sat down for an hour - one hour! - got our picnic out, and Jags ran straight through it. Sand everywhere. The whole thing ruined. Then we had to head home to make sure we didn’t miss our evening plans. 6 hours of travel, a frosty hubby and wife, a restless dog and 1 hour on a beach like sardines with some sandy pineapple. Not our finest moment. Although we did spot a seal! But, this is why you either get up and go to the coast first thing on a bank holiday, or avoid it at all costs!
Side note: Please help me understand why so many people drive to the beach, and set up camp in the car park, which isn't near the beach?! I think I must be missing something here, but I’m so confused?!
MISHAP 3: We had some work done in the garden to help us hopefully save our flower beds. A mix of a dog who likes to dig and a hot summer has left them looking very sad. Anyway, Jags decided to greet the workmen, not once but twice, with a pair of my knickers. I didn’t notice the second time, so they just stayed in the middle of the garden whilst the men worked around them ALL DAY. Can you cope?! And they weren’t from the fresh washing pile either. Suffice to say, it doesn't matter what happens to the garden, those men are NEVER coming back!
MISHAP 4: Talking of dogs, I’m in the dog house. New car, and I scraped one of the wheels big time. I’m a great driver in my opinion, very nippy, but the curb got too close to me on this journey. I thought ‘Ben won’t see this’. He did. Immediately. All I’m saying is, never ask me to lie for you, I can’t do it. I wanted to say ‘no idea how that happened’ but my face said it all and I had to endure the ‘I’m not mad, just disappointed’ chat. The worst!
The list could go on, but in true MISHAP style, I can’t remember anything else that happened!
List Of Joy…
📺 Watching: I crashed HOSTAGE on Netflix, and being a big fan of Suranne Jones, I really enjoyed it. Ending was maybe a little predictable, but I loved the drama!
🎧 Listening: Little self plug here, but a couple of months ago I recorded this interview for Bloomberg TV and its recently been released, so if you haven’t had a listen yet, here’s to an extra 30 minutes with me this week: EXTRAORDINARY LIFE STORIES
🥂 Drinking: So, the 0% rose I was talking about at the top of the newsletter is Kylie Minogue’s! It’s SO nice, and it is hard to find a non alcoholic option that is a crowd pleaser.
LTK Of The Week…
H&M BOOTS - I have to be honest, these have cropped up on my instagram SO much with everyone raving about them. They keep selling out, but I secured a pair and I LOVE them. Hope you can too. They’re generous on the calf too - hate a tight calf boot!
BALA BANDS - We went deep into movement today, and one way I love to move is in my Barre classes. I always say use light weights or Bala Bands. These are the Bala Bands!
CONVERSATION CARDS - These are THE BEST for nights with friends!
LULULEMON JACKET - Maybe it’s because I had a couple of years of hot flushes, but I’m obsessed with a lightweight jacket that’ll keep me dry and warm. Not too heavy, easily packable and looks great. I got this jacket last year, and take it everywhere / wear it all the time.
SO GOOD, BY EM THE NUTRITIONIST - I gave you one of her recipes last week and this book is full of goodness! I think a recipe book is always a great gift, or for some new inspiration in your kitchen and meal times.
COLOUR WOW SHINE SPRAY - very easy win to get shiny hair! This is always on my hair in class.
HOURGLASS MASCARA - Staple in the make up kit for years now.
NEVER FULLY DRESSED KNIT - LOVE IT! Seasons change and everything in the shops becomes brown. Not with this brand. I will style this jumper exactly how it is here. Dopamine hit for Autumn!

We’ve come to the end of newsletter No 3! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for your time.
Until next week, remember: Move your body, say ‘no’ as a full sentence, and please share your mishaps!
And, if you want to engage with each other, use the little speech bubble at the top left of this email, and as always, DM’s and personal messages sent to me in your own way, are always welcomed and read with love.

Ps If you think of one person who’d smile reading this today, hit forward. Little reminders travel further than you think.
